What Is SEO and How Does It Work? A Plain-English Guide
Search engine optimization, or SEO, is the work of making your website easier for search engines to understand and more useful for the people searching. Do it well and your pages appear higher in Google when someone looks for what you sell. Unlike advertising, you do not pay for each visitor, which is why SEO is one of the most cost-effective ways to grow a business online.
How search engines decide what to show
Google works in three steps. It crawls the web to discover pages, indexes them so it knows what each one is about, and ranks them every time someone searches. Ranking depends on hundreds of signals, but they come down to three questions:
- Can Google read the page? If a site is slow, broken on mobile or blocks crawlers, even great content struggles.
- Does the page answer the search? Content has to match what the person actually wants to know or do.
- Is the site trustworthy? Links and mentions from other reputable websites act as votes of confidence.
The three parts of SEO
Technical SEO
This is the foundation: fast loading, mobile-friendly pages, clean URLs, a logical site structure and no errors that stop search engines from crawling. Most websites have technical problems they do not know about, which is why a good SEO project starts with an audit.
On-page SEO
On-page work makes each page clear about its topic. That includes researching the keywords your customers use, writing helpful content around them, and getting the details right: title tags, headings, internal links and image alt text.
Off-page SEO
Off-page SEO builds your reputation elsewhere on the web. The main factor is links from relevant, credible sites. For local businesses it also covers your Google Business Profile, directory listings and reviews.
How long does SEO take?
SEO is not instant. Most websites see early movement within three to six months and stronger results after that. The timeline depends on how competitive your market is, the condition of your website and how consistently the work is done. The upside is that results compound: a page that ranks can keep bringing visitors for years.
Where to start
- Set up Google Search Console and Google Analytics so you can measure what is happening.
- Fix technical issues that affect speed, mobile usability and indexing.
- Research the keywords your customers search for and map each one to a page.
- Improve your most important pages first: home, services and product pages.
- Publish useful content regularly and earn links by being worth referencing.
Should you do SEO yourself or hire an agency?
